Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has met with the Queen in London overnight, with the meeting the first since Mr Rudd's election as Australia's Prime Minister.

Mr Rudd met with the Queen at Windsor Castle, where the pair discussed the PM's busy schedule, and the weather.

The Prime Minister arrived for what would become an hour long discussion with the Queen, however little information was released about the discussions.

It is understood Mr Rudd and Queen Elizabeth discussed the unseasonable weather in Britain, in addition to the hectic schedule of Mr Rudd's inaugural world trip.

It follows meetings with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, and the inevitable raising of the Republican agenda under the Rudd Government.

The Prime Minister has said overnight that while he remains committed to Australia becoming a Republic - it is not a short-term or nagging priority for his Government.

Mr Rudd said that the Republican movement would be free to spark a debate over the next year, before any likely Referendum on the issue.

"I expect that in the course of the year ahead you'll have an accelerating public debate about the republic," Mr Rudd said.

"I welcome that we should do that, we're a democracy and we'll be looking carefully at the way in which that debate unfolds."

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown meanwhile deflected the question, saying it would be a matter for the Australian people.

"This is a matter for the Australian people," Mr Brown said.
