Qantas 747 loses power on landing

A Qantas 747 with 300 passengers onboard has lost power during its landing in Thailand.

The airline today confirmed that a Qantas flight on Monday was forced to switch to backup battery power following the loss of supply.

Qantas said that the Boeing 747-400 was on approach to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International Airport when fifteen minutes before its scheduled landing, the flight deck and cabin lost its supply of power.

The pilots were then forced to use the aircraft's entire back-up batteries to restore basic services prior to the landing.

Qantas said that it had reported the incident to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA).

The aircraft is now in Bangkok receiving an engineering and safety assessment.

The reported incident comes as the Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association (ALAEA) is due to launch industrial action against the airline, amid a breakdown of talks over a pay dispute between Qantas and its engineers.

The union claims Qantas has only offered 3%, with the ALAEA calling for at least 5%, and an improvement to working conditions.

Qantas says the strike will not disrupt the airlines' operation, with strike action now postponed until Friday.
