Rudd's disability funding an insult says carers groups

The Prime Minister's disability plan is an insult carers say, following the announcement of an additional $100 MIllion in funding.

Prime Minster Kevin Rudd yesterday said that the Government would allocate a further $100 Million to accommodation for the disabled.

"This package is particularly focused on providing a response to the concerns that older carers often have about the future accommodation and support needs of their children," Mr Rudd said yesterday.

However the Carers Alliance says the new plan is an insult to those trying to provide care for their friends and family members.

National Convenor Nell Brown - whose daughter is disabled - says that the Prime Minister should not be allowed to get away with this being a "small step".

"You can't get away with 'it's a small first step'," Ms Brown told AAP.

"They [Labor] were the instigators of the Senate report that said there was a critical unmet massive need."

Ms Brown said that given the state of the budget, the Prime Minister should consider a much higher commitment to those in a carers position, or needing accommodation facilities.

"[Former Prime Minister] Howard left them $17 billion and [the budget has] grown enormously and yet, they're putting in $100 million. How insulting."
